Chudleigh church continues to support a wide
range of house and prayer groups that contribute much to the deepening and
understanding of personal faith. House groups meet on Monday and Tuesday evenings, on Thursday afternoons
and Friday mornings. See the table below for details. On a Thursday morning there is a prayer group gathering that meets in the church. Also, on the first Saturday in the month, a prayer time is held in Chudleigh church, preceded by breakfast in the Fellowship room from 8.00am. But what does this mean and what does Scripture teach us about our wonderful 'Living God'? 'The Tuesday Housegroup will discuss this during their weekly meetings after the summer break. We will be guided by Peter Lewis' book The Message of the Living God.. Apparently the author was asked by Intervarsity Press to write a study book on the 'doctrine of God'! But, rather than write a theological treatise, he chose to treat the subject in a more expository manner, by leading the reader through a thoughtful Scriptural journey from Genesis to Revelation. We, and those who join in this journey, are in for a very challenging and devotional time, as we try to understand what the Bible tells us about this ' Living God' of ours – Immanuel (God with us). John was in the Spirit and heard a loud voice say: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever. And I hold the keys of death.’ (Revelation 1:17b-18). Peter Lewis, in his introduction to these studies, draws extensively on Calvin's teaching - his great treatise did not begin with 'Does God exist?', but by 'How can God be known?' Not 'What is God?', but 'What am I meant to know of him which is proper to his glory? ' Our knowledge of God will be responsive - the joyful discovery that he knows us and wants us to know him (see Jeremiah 9: 23-24). We are reminded that Christianity is Christ-centred, not book-centred. Scripture is a means not an end but it is a powerful way to bring 'his word' before us. Calvin wrote 'Even if Scripture wins reverence for itself by its majesty, it seriously affects us only when it is sealed to our hearts through the Spirit' Jesus said: ‘I tell you the truth, before Abraham was ham, I am! "(John 8: 58) -- and in his prayer "And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began’. (John 17:5) We begin these studies on Tuesday 7th September 7-45pn at 17,Glebelands and would welcome anyone who would like to come along and share this journey with us.
